Oats are an excellent long-term staple: low in oil, cheap, and versatile. The type matters a little, and their bulk matters for planning.

Pantry (box) Mylar + oxygen absorber
Rolled / steel-cut oats 1 to 2 years 25 to 30 years
Instant / flavoured oats Months to a year Shorter (added ingredients)

Which oats store best

Plain rolled oats and steel-cut oats are just processed whole oat groats, low in oil and moisture, so they store for decades like white rice once the oxygen is gone. Instant and flavoured oats contain added sugar, milk powder or flavourings that shorten the shelf life, so keep those for the near term.

How to store them

Seal rolled or steel-cut oats in a mylar bag with a correctly sized oxygen absorber, inside a food-grade bucket, cool and dark. It's the same method as any dry staple, from our rice and beans guide.

Oats are bulky. Like pasta, oats are light and full of air, so they weigh far less per bucket than dense grains, only about 20 lb per 5-gallon bucket versus 36 lb of rice. Plan on more buckets for the same weight.

The verdict

Store plain rolled or steel-cut oats in mylar with an absorber and they keep for decades. Keep instant and flavoured oats for shorter-term use, and remember oats are bulky, so they fill buckets fast, per our how-much-fits guide.

The verdict

Rolled and steel-cut oats keep 25 to 30 years sealed in mylar with an oxygen absorber; instant and flavoured oats have a shorter life from their added ingredients. Store the plain oats like any dry staple, and plan for their bulk, only about 20 lb fits in a 5-gallon bucket.

Frequently asked questions

How long do oats last in mylar?

Rolled and steel-cut oats keep about 25 to 30 years sealed in mylar with an oxygen absorber, cool and dark, because they are low in oil and moisture. In the box they keep roughly 1 to 2 years.

Do instant oats store as well as rolled oats?

They store similarly when sealed, though instant oats are more processed and some flavoured packets add oils or sugar that shorten life. Plain rolled or steel-cut oats are the best choice for long storage.

Can you store oats without mylar?

For a year or two, an airtight food-grade container in a cool, dark spot is fine. For decades-long storage you need the oxygen and light barrier a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber provides.
